In Memoriam: Simon Rietbergen (1960 – 2025)

december 24, 2025 5:23 pm Gepubliceerd door

Simon Rietbergen was a deeply respected expert in tropical forestry and sustainable land management whose life and work left a lasting impact on global conservation. Born in The Hague, he studied tropical forestry at Wageningen University, where he was an active member of WSBV Sylvatica in 1980–81, the oldest study association of the university. Even then, Simon was recognized for his sharp mind, natural leadership, and warm lively presence.

Over more than three decades, Simon built an exceptional international career with organisations including IIED, the World Bank, IUCN and FAO. He was recognised for his deep expertise, his collaborative approach, and his ability to bring people together around complex environmental and development challenges. His work contributed to landmark initiatives, helping shape long-term efforts to restore degraded landscapes and support the communities who live in them, particularly in Africa.

Beyond his professional achievements, Simon was enriched by an extraordinary breadth of knowledge and interests. He took great pleasure in music, from jazz and blues to classical, and found joy in the natural world, especially in walking and observing birds, orchids, and the landscapes he moved through. Friends and colleagues cherished his wide-ranging curiosity, his generosity, and his ability to find delight in both people and the world around him.

Above all, Simon will be remembered for his positive spirit, his quick and generous humour, and the dear friendship he offered so freely. His loss leaves a quiet but enduring absence in the lives of many.

Simon is survived by his wife, Jennifer Rietbergen-McCracken, and their three children.

His smile and the wit he shared so effortless will be missed.
