Study day FUTURE OF MANGROVES - Mangrove Restoration In The Face Of Climate Change

VTB Study Day on Mangrove Restoration
Challenges in Times of Global Uncertainty
Functions, including biodiversity and CO2 absorption
We know a forest area like a mangrove has a wide variety of functions. These include coastal protection, water purification, food supply for communities living there, and simultaneously contributing to enormous biodiversity (at this transition between land and water) and CO2 absorption. Especially in these challenging times, with the enormous decline in biodiversity and climate change, mangroves play a crucial role!
Learning experiences
Unfortunately, many mangroves have been lost over time, causing regions to encounter all sorts of problems. For decades, projects to restore these mangroves have been running with varying degrees of success, encountering challenges such as competing land uses, including aquaculture.
Fortunately, lessons learned have gradually clarified the success factors and challenges, leading to greater progress in restoration! Various frameworks and methods have also taken shape, including the ‘Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration’ from the Global Mangrove Alliance (2023).
Set-up of the programme
The study day promises to be an interesting event, where insights from various perspectives, the latest methods, and practical examples will be shared with us. These will be presented by an NGO, academia, the business community, and a local organisation. See the attached flyer for the speakers.
The speakers will not only give a presentation with an opportunity to ask questions, but everyone can also actively participate in an exchange with them and each other during two breakout rounds.
As usual, we will conclude the afternoon with drinks, allowing us to catch up and/or delve deeper into the topic. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for those interested to stay for dinner— at your own expense- for approximately €20.
Non-members are also cordially invited to the study afternoon, with a modest contribution of €10 for non-students and €7.50 for students (free for members). So bring your colleagues, business associates, and friends!
